Southern Elephant Seals in the South Shetlands

On the way back from the Antarctic Peninsula we stopped at Livington Island in the South Shetland Islands.  It was a very cold day with bitter winds but worth every second on land.  It is bleak landscape but there are elephant seals on the beach!  As long as you keep a respectful distance the young male seals ignore you. Once in a while one tries to assert some dominance over another  – practicing for the day they will attempt to guard several females and ward off other males.  These juvenile males huddle together in what appears to be uneasy peace – but I am being anthropomorphic!
